Gordon Moore

Gordon Moore is a multi-media artist based on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. One of many artists in his family, Gordon started drawing and painting at a young age. A childhood of fishing, hunting, sailing and surfing instilled in him a deep appreciation for nature. This interest translated into a curiosity for science and sustainable design at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional high school.

Eventually, Gordon’s affinity for both academic and artistic pursuits led him to a five-year Dual-Degree program offered by Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, allowing him the opportunity to hone both fields. After several years of experimenting, Gordon became focused fully on his creative practice, immersed in departments like furniture design, filmmaking, animation, painting, and, later on, ceramics. His thesis work, a 9-minute experimental animation titled “Rain Pot,” utilized ceramics to explore the potential for physical objects to live in digital spaces.

After earning a BA in the History of Art and Architecture from Brown and a BFA in Animation from RISD, Gordon returned home to Martha’s Vineyard to begin his studio practice.

In exchange for space to create his own work, he is currently working as a studio assistant at Merry Farm Pottery, a local pottery owned by another Vineyard local and Brown alumni, Micah Thanhauser. Though his work constantly shifts between digital and physical spaces, Gordon views himself primarily as an object-maker, appreciating the humility of an object of use and routine.
